A Crosswalk Illuminator on each pole, forward-facing in the crosswalk, will illuminate the crosswalk and pedestrians when the system is activated by a push-button or sensor. The lighting will remain steady-on for the entire duration of the flash cycle of the RRFBs and Flashing LED Signs. The system meets all FHWA luminance requirements and will not create a silhouette effect on the pedestrian.
Meets FHWA Illuminance Requirements for Crosswalks
TraffiCalm Crosswalk Illuminators have 900 lumens and exceed FHWA crosswalk illumination requirements to have a vertical illuminance level in the crosswalk of 20 lux, measured at a height of 1.5 meters (5 feet) from the road surface. Each illuminator controller or collaborator has a sensor to measure the amount of ambient light. The crosswalk illuminator is only illuminated during nighttime conditions.
